Three years ago I was at the Conference for Rural Church folks from around the globe who gathered to worship, to teach, to learn and to share experiences and stories in the struggles that rural churches and rural communities face. As part of this Conference, we were guided through a Bible Study that viewed the story of the
demoniac healed at Gerasene, from the point of view of Jesus confronting the powers of the Roman Empire….

Friday Night...

Tim Huff – Plenary

Tim talked about celebrating small victories and sacred moments.

Tim has such a humble and unassuming way about him. I didn’t even know when it was he was beginning his plenary because the focus was on others not him. I wondered when the actual speaker was going to begin. After about 20 minutes of him talking, I looked at the schedule and, lo and behold, he was the plenary speaker!

So, for those of you who are venturing this way occasionally, and wondering why stuff isn’t popping up here like popcorn it’s probably because the cost for wireless here is ridiculous ($13 per 24 hour period). Considering also how much there is to do and take in, process and connect with, I don’t wonder that people are choosing to remain silent for the time being…

The Vigil

Tonight we also were encouraged to attend a vigil for those we are in community with. At the end of Greg’s plenary, Phyllis Novak of SKETCH! gave us instructions with what to do with the bandannas on the tables. We each took one, wrote on it the name of someone, or a place, or a word that we want remembered that is in some way connected to our community and the people that we are called to advocate for…
