The Vigil
Tonight we also were encouraged to attend a vigil for those we are in community with. At the end of Greg’s plenary, Phyllis Novak of SKETCH! gave us instructions with what to do with the bandannas on the tables. We each took one, wrote on it the name of someone, or a place, or a word that we want remembered that is in some way connected to our community and the people that we are called to advocate for. After we write on them, we were to meet downstairs in the lobby and go in groups of 30-50 up to the parliament building 2 blocks away and gather there to remember.
Once there, people gathered in concentric circles and tied their bandannas together. Once they were tied together, a couple girls went through the circles and helped to create a spiral from the concentric circles. Then there was prayer. Two moments of prayer.
Then after the prayers and the creation of the spiral, we laid the bandannas down and all stepped out and formed a huge circle around that “tree ring” of prayers. Then two more moments of prayer. It was cold and windy and amazing. I’m sure that the Spirit moved, and people were given gifts of images and prayers and burdens lifted.
May our LORD be praised and his children refreshed and,
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. there is Hatred, let me sow Love. Where there is Injury, Pardon. Where there is Doubt, Faith. Where there is Despair, Hope. Where there is Darkness, Light, and Where there is Sadness, Joy.
O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; To be understood, as to understand; To be loved, as to love; For it is in giving that we receive, It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, And it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
